Clever Fruit Products (Clever), which produces fermented superfruit natural ingredients, announces it has joined Refed, the US-focused foodwaste pioneer.  A key component of this opportunityn is Refed’s Funder Circle which is a broad collection of investors and philanthropy partners committed to lowering food waste.

Clever product focus on upcycling superfruit includes rescuing fruit that is farm loss (otherwise not harvested), ugly fruit (not attravtive enough for super markets), and the huge amount of fruit pulp thrown away in the preparation process for fruit juices. In most cases, the vaste majority of fruits health value is in the pulp and skins.  Study’s show that approximately 25% of the fruit never enters the supply chain, in some cases as high as 65% of annual crops.

“The irony is that in most cases ugly fruit has a better polyphenolic profile (the goodness) than fully ripened fruit. At Clever, we explore farm loss issues and expect farm loss to expand, not contract. As a
Society, we need to make full use of this food source”, said Sean Sears, Chief Executive Officer for Clever. “The nutritive potential of all the fruit that is currently wasted can make a significant impact on world hunger and future greenhouse gas limitations.”
