Clever Fruit Products (“Clever”) is pleased to announce it has been selected as the winner of Nova Scotia’s Wild Blueberry Innovation Challenge. Launched on December 13, 2019, by the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and the Wild Blueberry Producers Association of Nova Scotia, the purpose of the challenge is to identify and encourage the commercial development of innovative value-added products that utilize NS wild blueberries.

Clever combines the nutritive power of the NS Wild Blueberry with its proprietary fermentation technologies, creating an ingredient based on the berries polyphenolic profile. These technologies can be used with any fruit it works with, resulting in functional ingredients that are more beneficial than the original fruit.

The goal of the competition is to support innovation, find new markets, and increase Nova Scotia’s Wild Blueberry industries sustainability. Clever has been awarded $126,000 in non-dilutive funding to help launch its ingredient aimed at the supplement and functional food market.

“The nutrient potential of the NS wild blueberry is already impressive, and we have found a way to amplify these health benefits through our fermentation technologies,” says Liam Tayler, President of Clever. “This investment is key to completing our next stage of scientific research and the launch of our wild blueberry powder.”

The Department of Agriculture and the Wild Blueberry Producers Association of Nova Scotia is working together to support innovation and find new markets for Nova Scotia provincial fruit – the wild blueberry. The Wild Blueberry Innovation Challenge was launched on December 13, 2019, to support new, innovative packaging and value-added food products that use wild blueberries. As part of the Building Tomorrow Fund Project, $280,000 over two years was earmarked for two Innovation Challenge competitions.
